Trans-Atlantic European emigrants en-route to North America queuing on the deck of the Hamburg-America Line’s 'Graf Waldersee'

Trans-Atlantic European emigrants en-route to North America queuing on the deck of the Hamburg-America Line’s 'Graf Waldersee' The ship was built in 1898 and had first, second and third (steerage) class. Steerage was a very uncomfortable experience for those on board but a profitable one for the steamship companies. Passengers were in crowded and cramped conditions. First and second-class passengers had far better accommodation and excellent meals. This image is from a photograph in an old album of shipping memorabilia. It will look soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1900s photograph.
