Ullapool (Ullapul or Ulapul in Gaelic) is a small town in Ross and Cromarty, Highland, Scotland. Despite its small size, it is the largest settlement for many miles around. Ullapool was founded in 1788 as a herring port designed by Thomas Telford, on the east shore of Loch Broom. The harbour is still the centre of the town, used as a fishing port, yachting haven and ferry port with boats to Stornoway in the Outer Hebrides. The town also boasts a small museum, an arts centre, a swimming pool and plenty of pubs, and is a centre for walkers and other holidaymakers in the area. Ullapool has a strong reputation for as a centre of music and performance, with several Feisean and a large number of gigs during the summer in the local halls and hotels, especially in The Ceilidh Place. The Ullapool Guitar Festival takes place in early October every year and attracts high calibre performers, and the Loopallu music festival, held in 2005, was very well received and will become a recurring, annual, event. Ullapool also has its own radio station called Loch Broom FM
