Rufous Hummingbird Selasphorus rufus (Gmelin) Status: The Rufous Hummingbird is a rare fall transient, with most records from south-central Kansas. There is one specimen from Barton County on 23 August 1973. Period of Occurrence: This hum- mingbird appears in Kansas as early as 21 July and has been seen as late as 4 October. However, most records seem to fall in mid- to late August. Habits and Habitat: Most records have come from around hum- mingbird feeders, where Rufous and Ruby-throated Hummingbirds intermix. Having the Ruby-throated Hummingbird for comparison makes identification easier. Rufous Hummingbirds are attracted to red flowers, such as cannas, salvia, and petunias. Like all hum- mingbirds, this species flies backwards or hovers in one spot with great agility.
