. The American florist : a weekly journal for the trade. Floriculture; Florists. 796 The American Florist. May ig. Chicago. MARKET IMPROVES. Business picked up slightly last week. The poor conditions of the market for the past few weeks were somewhat ameliorated by the approaching holi- day. Prices are firmer. There are more buyers in the market and ship- ping orders are coming in much fast- er than a week ago. Taken as a whole, the stock is of better quality with few exceptions. Here and there one finds the tail end of a crop, but it is not often. Roses still continue to pour into the market to a somewhat decreasing demand. In most cases the rose stock is of excellent quality and should bring better figures. Whole- salers are consoling themselves with the thought that trade will stiffen up and prices go soaring before Deco- ration day, although judging from abundance of stock, it is hardly prob- able. American Beauty, Liberty, Rich- mond, Brides and Bridesmaids are the prevailing varieties. Carnations have completely recovered from their shock of Easter time. Colored carnations have been in big demand and in- variably brought good prices. The stock is excellent and it is predicted that there will be a shortage of these blooms before Decoration day. Sev- eral wholesalers made trips into the country in search of carnations but came back disappointed, reporting that greenhouses were bare and but few in sight. This condition seems to be general about the country as other cities have imposed a heavy drain on the supply. Gladioli of mixed sorts are coming into the market in fair quantities. They are bringing $ per dozen. Lilies are shortening up and there are but few to be seen. Bulbous stock of various kinds is ar- riving in good quantities. The quality is of the best and the prices are firm. The market is well supplied with green stock of all sorts, adiantum. Aspara- gus plumosus, A. Sprengeri and smi- lax being very plentiful. NOTES.
