The poste-rior inclined planes begin at thepoints of the spines of the ischia, pass downward and backward, andterminate at the middle of the sa-crum and coccyx. The generalshape of the pelvic cavity is ratherthat of a four-sided lozenge thanoval, as is commonly to many authorities, these inclined planes play an im-portant role in the mechanism oflabor. They are supposed to influ-ence the movements of the present-ing part, causing it, when it strikes.
