At first, however,some of them asked Dr. Cook if Iwanted the information he obtained forthe purpose of making other people !! The flash-liofht work never failed tobe a subject of lively gossip in the na-tive community. All the fresh arrivalswere told what was before them almostbefore they had unhitched their dogs,and as soon as a native was photo-graphed, he would invariably tell of the experience toan admiring group, narrating every minute detail. When the sky was clear, and we had the moon withus, the arctic night was one of remarkable that dry atmosphere, the moon and stars seem toshine with a degree of power and brilliancy unequalledin temperate latitudes. We saw many auroras, but. BOY. Flash-light. 176 Northward over the Great Ice they were comparatively faint, and not so pronouncedin outline and brightness as those observed in South Greenland. November 14th was a fme day, and in the afternoon and night the moon was very brilliant. The temperature rose to several degrees above zero, and the house was oppress ively warm all day. On the I 6th, a full moon cir-cled, and the scene was in-tensely brilliant, the moon hang- ingr in a cloudless sky, and Arctu- ru s, Aldebaran, and the Great Dipper shining with remarkable brilliancy. The ice-blink at thehead of the bay was plainly visi-ble in the moons rays,
