Portrait photo circa 1882 of Irish playwright, poet, author and aesthete Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900). Wilde was one of the most famous and flamboyant personalities of his time and his works included the play The Importance of Being Earnest and the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. At the height of his fame he became embroiled in a series of high-profile trials which ended with him being jailed for two years for "gross indecency" in relation to his homosexual relationships with other men. He subsequently moved to France and died destitute while still only in his forties. Photo by Napoleon Sarony (1821 - 1896).
