A mock up version of the Orion next generation space capsule is secured in the cradle inside the well deck of the USS John P. Murtha during an open ocean recovery test October 31, 2018 in the Pacific Ocean. NASA and the Navy has not performed open ocean recovery of a manned space capsule since the Apollo project in the 60's and are testing procedures and hardware that will be used to recover the Orion spacecraft after it splashes down in the Pacific Ocean following future deep space exploration missions.
