GIOTTO di Bondone (b. 1267, Vespignano, d. 1337, Firenze) Legend of St Francis: 25. Dream of St Gregory 1300 Fresco, 270 x 230 cm Upper Church, San Francesco, Assisi This is the twenty-fifth of the twenty-eight scenes (twenty-five of which were painted by Giotto) of Legend of Saint Francis. Giotto's authorship of some parts of the last scenes is often questioned, and in the case of those in the last bay (after No. 25, usually attributed to the St Cecilia Master) denied completely. The Dream of Gregory IX is distinguished by yet another remarkable representation of space. The scene is set in a well-proportioned room akin to those in the Confirnation of the Rule and the St Francis preaching before Honorius III. However, the fact that the spatial construction is no longer perfectly centralized constitutes a step towards the artist's later treatment of interiors. Of special interest here is the strong definition of the curtain suspended from the ceiling, which heightens the credibility of the spatial setting. *** Keywords: ************* Author: GIOTTO di Bondone Title: Legend of St Francis: 25.
