Anopheles mosquito head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a female Anopheles sp. mosquito, the vector for the malaria parasite. The mouthparts consist of two mandibular palps (lower left) and a proboscis (not seen), which contains the piercing and sucking instruments necessary to obtain a blood meal from humans and other animals.
