Human red blood cells by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Human red blood cells by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Fresh blood was dispersed in an isotonic glutaraldehyde fixative and the cells were captured on a Nuclepore filter, dehydrated, and prepared for SEM. Red blood cells transport oxygen into the tissues and they transport carbon dioxide out through their iron-containing substance called haemoglobin. Enhanced SEM. Image width: 32 micrometers; magnification: 3125x if the image is printed 10cm wide.
