Scenic landscape View across valley towards Bavarian Alps, Eisenburg, Bavaria, Germany

The castle of Eisenberg was built in 1313 by the Hohenegg family. The Noble family sold the castle to Austria in 1382. It was badly damaged in 1525 during a local peasant revolt (Bauerkrieg) and rebuilt 10 years later by Werner Volker of Freyberg. On the 15th Sept 1646, just before the end of the 30 years war, the Austrians burnt the castles of Eisenberg, Freyberg and Falkenstein in a scorched earth policy.
