The rear of the W granary at Corbridge Roman Site, Northumberland, England, UK, looking S to the columns of its portico beside Stanegate. Low stone sleeper walls support a raised flagged floor. To keep the grain cool & dry air was circulated via narrow vents below the floor & large louvred wooden shutters at a higher level. The adjacent E & W granaries were surrounded by an enclosure wall & a stone-lined drain to reduce the damp. External buttresses supported a wide roof to throw rain away from the walls. The loading bays at the S end were protected from the weather by columned porches (porticoes) standing beside the main street (Stanegate): the level of the road gradually rose in relation to the columns, its final resurfacing took place some time after AD364. Work began on the granaries around AD 180, but they were not completed until the early C3rd & then remained in use into the C4thAD.
