WATSON, William, a portrait painter, prac-tised in Dublin in the last quarter of the 18thcentury. He was better known as a flute-player,however, than as an artist. His wife paintedflowers and fruit, and in 1771 exhibited oncewith the Free Society. WATSON, W. Smellie, a Scottish portrait painter,was born in Edinburgh in 1796. He was a pupilof his father, the first President of the ScottishAcademy, and also studied in the TrusteesAcademy. Coming to London in 1815, he workedfor five years in the schools of the Royal Aca-.
