OLIVER CROMWELL, one of the most remarkable men England ever produced,and one whose character seems to baffle almost in the proportion in which itstimulates investigation, was born April 25, 1599, at Huntingdon, England, ofhighly respectable parents, and by his mothers side, it is said, he was remotelyconnected with the monarch over whose destinies he was to exercise so greatan influence. He was considered an obstinate boy, and at both school andcollege submitted unwillingly to educational discipline. In 1616, he became a member of Sidney college, Cambridge, whence he was removed, at the death of his father, shortly after, and entered at Lincolns Inn for the study of the law.
