Total solar eclipse, 7 August 1869, stereoscopic card. These are paired stereoscopic images which provide a 3D image (stereogram) when viewed side-by-side. Total solar eclipses (when the Sun is completed obscured by the Moon) usually occur less than once a year, last only a few minutes and can only be seen from a small area of the Earth's surface. This image was prepared from negatives made by the Philadelphia Photographic Eclipse Expedition, managed by US scientist Henry Jackson Morton (1836-1902), under the direction of US Navy professor John Huntington Crane Coffin (1815-1890) of the Nautical Almanac Office (United States Naval Observatory), Washington DC, USA.
