Infected tonsil. Close-up of an infected tonsil (red area at centre and centre left) in the throat of a 17-year-old boy. The infected area is shown by the small white patch at lower centre. This is the condition called quinsy, or a peritonsillar abscess. It involves the tissue surrounding the tonsil, and usually occurs after tonsillitis (inflammation of the tonsils). Symptoms include a sore throat and difficulty swallowing. Quinsy is usually treated with antibiotic drugs. In severe cases, the abscess may need to be surgically drained.
