When on the lowspeed or reverse, a differential on the countershaft isin DIAGRAM OF CHRISTIE DIRECT-DRIVE MECHANISM. The drums which the flywheel cones engage eachcarry a large gear ring, G, on their periphery, andthese rings are driven by small gears on the ends ofa countershaft, which receives its motion from a shortcountershaft above it, driven at a reduced speed by a large gear on the two-to-one cam shaft that operatesthe exhaust valves. By engaging one or the otherof two gears on this shaft with a gear on the maincountershaft, and throwing in the small cone clutch, the low speed and reverse are obtained. Thus it willbe seen that the present car has all theessential parts of any ordinary auto-mobile, including the differential; andit is by no means as much of a freak asa car exhibited at the Paris show, whichwill be found described in the Sup-plement for January 7. This car hasno low speed or reverse, the latter be-ing obtained by reversing the motor, and the drive being through a frictionclutch and longitudinal driving shaftto a countershaft, and thence
