Cutting grass silage in Longridge, Preston, UK 21st May, 2014. Farming Weather. Heavy rain forecast as farmers are busy harvesting the first cut of grass & green foliage crops in late May. A cut that is most important, as growth at this time of year is vigorous with the grass is rich in energy as it produces leaf rather than going to seed. Grass silage is usually produced by stock farmers two or three times a year with crops for silage being fertilized to increase production very much like a conventional arable crop.

Grass silage is basically pickled grass. The aim is to retain as much feed value as possible by encouraging lactic acid bacteria to ferment grass sugar to produce lactic acid. The lactic acid lowers the pH and prevents the growth of spoilage micro-organisms, allowing a stable preservation of grass as silage.
