Respiratory system, anterior (front) view. Artwork taken from The Viscera of the Human Body (1840), a textbook edited by Jones Quain and Erasmus Wilson. The thorax has been dissected and the ribs and heart removed to show the lungs, the sites of gaseous exchange. Above this is the trachea (windpipe), horizontally striped as it is reinforced by rings of cartilage. The blue vessels are the brachiocephalic veins, and the red vessels the carotid arteries. The bilobed thyroid gland is at top (red).
