Lenah H. Sutcliffe Higbee (1874-1941) became the second superintendent of the Navy Nurse Corps in 1911. She lead the Navy Nurse Corps during World War I and retired from the Navy in 1922. In 1945, the USS Higbee (DD-806) was named in her honor and was the frist Navy destroyer to be named after a woman member of the Navy.
