The Market Cross in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, constructed in 1490 ,the octagonal structure carved in limestone during the Perpendicular Period. In the background is the Malmesbury Abbey founded in the 7th century by Benedictine monks and became a noted centre of learning. The body of King Athelstan was laid to rest in the abbey in 941.
