I was always told that Stump fill-ed those Indians with whiskey andwhile they were in an alcoholic stup-or he dispatched them with a toma-hawk. C172nd Inf. He was very fond ofdrink and nearly always wore a redbandanna handkerchief around hisneck. He loved his booze and wo-men of low morality. On a Sunday in a County hotelMertz and others were drinking anddancing. Some one tripped fell over a chair and sustainedinternal injuries from the effects ofwhich he died.
