Laparoscopy. View of a surgeon using a laparoscope during surgery. A laparoscope is a type of endoscope, and can be inserted into a patient's abdomen to view internal organs. It is commonly used for minor operations, as it means only a small incision has to be made, reducing the risk of infection and scar formation. Operations are carried out by small surgical tools which can be introduced into the body, and operated from outside it. The most common operation of this type is female sterilisation, where the fallopian tubes are cut and tied to prevent eggs from reaching the uterus.
