Design for a Playing Card; Sacheverell's Triumph; Black and White Illustration; Henery Sacheverell was an Anglican clergyman who became famous for making a speech entitled The Perils of False Brethren, in Church, and State; In it he argued the doctrine of non-resistance, this at the time of war betweeen England and France. He attacked the Whig government of the day who were seen as promoting the war with France. The Whigs prosecuted Sacheverell, who was tried and sentenced to three years suspension and his sermons to be burned. This, however, led to Sacheverell being seen as a martyr and rioting amongst the populace. Popular feeling had turned against the Whig administration and in 1710 the Whig Ministers were dismissed by Queen Anne and a new Tory goverment appointed.
