Sally Kristen Ride (1951-2012), US physicist, astronaut and first US woman in space. A private individual, obituaries after her death named her same-sex partner of 27 years. This made Ride the first known LGBT astronaut, represented here by the rainbow flag on her spacesuit. Ride was studying for her PhD in physics when she answered a newspaper advertisement for NASA astronauts. She was accepted as an astronaut candidate in January 1978. On 18 June 1983 Ride became the first US woman in space (STS-7, Challenger). She flew on Challenger again (bottom right), on mission STS 41-G in October 1984. Ride retired from NASA in 1987. In 2001 she set up Sally Ride Science to encourage girls to consider careers in science and engineering.
