Witha faithfulness worthy of the highest commen- THE BUILDING FUND 87 dation, and with a devotion which shouldnever be forgotten, they sought to the utmostof their abihty to secure the plans of a build-ing which would combine beauty and comfortwith churchly dignity and durability, andwhich would be in every way worthy of thecommanding position it was to occupy. Inthis, as events proved, they were THE NEW BUILDING The ground for the new building was brokenby Mr. William E. Cooke, chairman of thebuilding committee, at 5 oclock Wednesdayafternoon, October 23, 18S9. Drs. Paden andMiller, Dr. William Brenton Greene, Jr., pastorof the old Tenth Church, and Mr. Robert , also took an active part in the after, the cellar was dug and the heavyfoundation walls placed in position. On Saturday afternoon, May 31, 1890, the corner-stone was laid by Dr. J. R. Miller, with impressive ceremonies, in the CORNER- presence of a large gathering of LAYING happy people. Dr. Paden made a brief address of welcome. Dr. William Hutton offered a prayer. Dr. J. C. Thompson read the scriptures (i. Peter, 2 : 1-9), Mr. Robert C.
