In March, 1881, he was ordered to the command ofthe steam-frigate Powhatan, and in October of thesame year became chief of the Bureau of Navigation,which position he held until the fall of 1889, when heresigned to command the Squadron of Evolution, withhis flae, as an acting rear-admiral, on board the Chi-cago. He was promoted to the grade of commodoreFebruary 12, 1889. CAPTAIN G. S. LUTTRELL WARD, (retired). Captain G. S. Luttrell Ward was born in Phila-delphia, Pennsylvania, educated for the bar, and admittedto practice January 17, 1863. He was commissioned assecond lieutenant. Third Pennsylvania Cavalry, May17, 1863, and served with his regiment in the FirstBrigade, Second Cavalry Division, Army of the the battle of Brandy Station, Virginia, June 9, 1863 ;as acting aide-de-camp on the stallof Colonel Taylor,in action of Aldie, June 21, 1863 ; as acting aide-de-campon the staff of General J. B. Mcintosh, in the battle ofGettysburg, July 2-3, [863, and action of Shepherds-town, July 16, 1863. He returned to duty with hisregiment and with it in the action of Culpeper Court-House, September 13, 1863; in battles of Occoquan,(detached with regiment in General Bufords first cavalrydivision), October 15, 1863, and New Hope Church(Mine Run), November 27, 1863; and act
