Many a grandparent of today remembers the Drunken Period ofAmerican history that began after the Revolution and continued for twogenerations. Everybody drank. The annual consumption of malt andalcoholic liquors was fifty quarts to the family, or about double what it isnow. In 1808, a New Yorker named Clark (Billy James Clark, M.
