'Smash Apartheid' button badge c. 1970

Smash Apartheid button badge c. 1970. The anti apartheid movement gathered momentum in the nineteen sixties and seventies with the jailing in South Africa of ANC (African National Congress) members such as Nelson Mandela. The apartheid system of separateness for different races was introduced in 1948 by the ruling National Party. Resistance and a trade embargo eventually forced the end of minority rule in 1993 and in 1994 Nelson Mandela and the ANC won power in the country's first multi-racial elections - a vintage nineteen seventies item.
