The ancient structures date to Bagan's 11th and 13th Century heyday when there were 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries built on the plains. The stupa here is one of 2,200 that remain. A stupa is also known as a pagoda and are large structures with a relic chamber During its pinnacle, the population of Bagan is estimated to be between 50,000 and 200,000. But until the advent of tourism only a few villagers remained in Old Bagan. Now, it has attracted a sizable population which lives in either New Bagan or south of Old Bagan, which is now off-limits to new development. The majority population are Burmans.
