Savarts Trapezoid Violin or Box-fiddle was one of the mostselebrated and satisfactory experiments ever tried on the con-struction of the instrument. He was led to its production bya series of carefully conducted experiments, which went toprove—(1) that a plane surface vibrates much more readily thanan arched or curved one ; (2) that consequently there are pointson the surface of a violin of the ordinary form where the vibra-tions are reduced to a minimum, or cease altogether ; (3) thatthe bouts, corner blocks, andyy holes are the principal causesand localities of this reduced vibration.
