I have Fig, 29.—The cranium is thick, so Marions protector is raising a foldon the dura mater and the brain which it will plough up if a roughoperator continues to push the instrument onwards. seen two experienced operators (Professor Segond andSergius Rabinovitch) do the same, and I know ofsurgeons who have been obliged to give up passingGiglis saw by means of the guide. It may happen sometimes that after getting theguide into position the saw cannot be made to slidealong the gutter ; this can be got over by attachingit to the end of the guide, which has a small holefor this purpose. When the guide is withdrawn thesaw is drawn with it, but then the instrument servessimply as a tractor and no longer protects anything. I have designed and got M. Collin to make a small. 803 Figs. 30 and 31.—As it penetrates, the slender steel ribbon, keepingits beak agaiilst the bone, fits itself exactly to the interval betweenthe dura mater and the skull, and emerges as soon as it reachesthe hole of exit. 804 WOUNDS OF THE SKULL tool, which was presented in my name to the Societede Chirurgie by Professor Segond. I have sinceperfected it, but it still remains very simple (fig. 24).It is a simple steel band about 10 inches long andJ inch broad, very thin, perfectly elastic, and highly tempered. The bandis curved on the of its extremi-ties, the beak, whichis slightly roundedand thick, loosensthe dura inches from thebeak, on the upperconcave surface, there is a hookwith its end turneddown pointing tothe beak.
