On the top of his dome Mansart placed a remarkable lanternsurmounted by an obelisk, and he made the outline worse by an over-hanging balcony which disconnected the dome and its first idea had lost itself in details; moreover, Mansart was immersedin business and ever deepening intrigues, and must have left the workalmost entirely to his subordinates. In 1685 Mansart, whose salarywas 10,000 francs per annum, had as his draughtsmen Cauchy, Davilerand Pierre Cailleteau dit LAssurance, all found for him by the State The Academy of Architecture had, however, expHcitly condemned this practice.
