The Oteake Conservation Park protects the northernmost part of Central Otago with its tussock grass lands in a dry climate.

Central Otago is the only region in New Zealand with a continental climate. In the rain shadow of the Southern Alpes the countryside is dry with hot summer and cold winter temperature. Tussock grass land is the normal vegetation, only along the few rivers shrub and trees are growing, often planted by farmers. The Oteake Conservation Park protects the northernmost part of this landscape. Central Otago hat als einzige Region Neuseelands ein kontinentales Klima mit heißen Sommern und kalten Wintern, sowie wenig Niederschlägen. Das Oteake Schutzgebiet schützt diese einmalige Graslandschaft.
