FIG. 5 view, transverse section and end view, byFigs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, and, except in being ofmuch smaller dimensions, and having endplatforms and hand brake rigging only,the car body does not materially differfrom those of present practice. Dimensions heads was 28 feet 8 inches. The specialdesign of trucks, the continuous draw barand the couplers, which are relics of oldpractice, need be only briefly referred to. The trucks, the wheels of which werecast iron with chilled treads, 30 inches indiameter, had rectangular wooden frames,and, as shown in the side view, had nopedestals, the axle boxes being connectedto the side members of the frame by leafsprings. This was, at that time, commonpractice, and in the locomotive trucks ofseveral builders, notably the New CastleManufacturing Co., the axle boxes oneach side were bolted to the ends of longleaf springs, the middles of which wereattached to the truck transom, the springsthemselves forming the side members ofthe truck frame.
