Clinical photograph showing a tumour of muscle in a limb (the oval, white object), revealed during exploratory surgery. Tumours of skeletal muscle may be benign or malignant. Benign tumours affecting skeletal or heart muscle, known as rhabdomyomas are rare. Malignant (cancerous) tumours originating in, or displaying the characteristics of striated muscle are termed rhabdomyosarcomas. The type of cancerous tumour that affects the muscles of limbs in persons of middle age is called a pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma. This type of cancer responds poorly to treatment.
