The gaucho is a type of peasant rider characteristic of the plains and adjacent areas of Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, southern Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul), southern Chile and the Bolivian Chaco. It is identified by its status as skilled horseman and his link with the proliferation of cattle in the region and the economic and cultural activities derived from it, especially meat consumption and the use of leather.
