Northern lights (aurora borealis) over a cottage in Clun, Shropshire, UK. The northern lights are a coloured display of light occasionally visible in the night sky, usually only at high latitudes. This aurora was visible at much lower latitudes than usual due to a major geomantic storm, or magnetic storm. This is a disturbance in the Earth's magnetic field caused by a stream of charged particles from the sun (solar wind). When these charged particles collide with gas molecules and atoms high in the Earth's atmosphere, they are caused to emit light. Photographed on the 10th of May 2024.
