The Main Street is a popular stop off point for tourists, having a number of cafes, food stores, motels, toilets and places of interest. The town grew up as a mining town for both gold and coal. Mining history attracts visitors to the area. It was the first town in New Zealand to be lit by electricity, produced from water power from the inangahua river.
