BOULDER WALL WITH VINES (see plan no. 6) A GOOD opportunity for using vines as a covering is afforded by arough boulder wall bordering a highway. In the case selectedhere an entrance of four back-pointed boulder piers gives achance to plant some of the close-chnging vines upon them, but the roughwall itself is hidden by scrambling vines planted at the back and allowedto droop forward and over. ^^ e may suppose a forty-foot highway with an eight-foot plantingspace occupied by young Pin Oaks planted forty feet apart. A five-footsidewalk extends between the planting space and the property line. Togive the vines room we shall set the wall about five feet back from theproperty Une, the strip to be kept in mown lawn. Beyond the wall themam lawn soon begins, with its trees, shrubbery, and open spaces. Tohide the back of the wall, as seen from the house, and the soil hump andthe bases of the vines, a narrow, irregular belt of shrubben,- is suggestedupon the lawn. These feature
