Mr. Harris was a man of upright moral character and 424 HISTORY OF PENACOOK. correct habits; of a quiet, unostentatious disposition, but genialand courteous at all times. He had in a marked degree thatdesirable quality of mind which is expressed by the term level-headed. In his relations to the workmen in his factory, he wasliberal, considerate, and just, and was respected and beloved bythem to a greater extent than is usual in such E. Sheldon Harris. As a citizen Mr. Harris was universally esteemed by the wholecommunity, and was called to serve in the various offices in thetown, and was honored with an election as representative of Bos-cawen in the state legislature. In his earlier years of residencein Penacook Mr. Harris gave some attention to music; he had avery fine bass voice, and sang for several years in the choirs ofthe Baptist and the Congregational churches. He was also a EDSON H. MATTICE. 425 prominent member of the Fisherville Cornet band, organized in1858, in which he played a tuba. He was one of the early mem-bers of Horace Chase lodge, and took much interest in the workof that organization. Mr. Harris was twice married; first, on June 20, i860, toCassandra A., daughter of Nathan B.
