A detail of the decorative Art Nouveau façade of the Animatógrafo do Rossio, possibly Lisbon’s oldest surviving cinema. Portugal

Possibly Lisbon’s earliest surviving cinema the Animatógrafo do Rossio was opened in 1907 by brothers Ernesto Cardoso Correia and Joaquim Correia Cardoso. It later became a childrens cinema, then a regular theatre showing live performances. Since the early 1990’s it has been in use as an “adult” cinema, screening erotic movies, and as a venue for peep shows and striptease performance. Nevertheless it still has one of the finest Art Nouveau façades to be found in Lisbon, complete with the original decorative tiled panels by M. Queriol and Jorge Pinto.
