Moving Day for Catenaries WHEN a wheel broke on an eastbound freight trainon the main line of the Pennsylvania Railroadrecently, about a thousand yards west of Wayne Stationin the Broad Street-Paoli electrification zone, twenty-three loaded coal cars were scattered over the fourtracks. The services of four cranes, two at each end of. BUT THE OVERHEAD, AT THAT, SUFFERED LESSTHAN THE RAILS the MTeckage, were required for thirteen hours beforeone track could be restored to service. The work of removing the entangled wreckage wassomewhat impeded by the 11,000-volt overhead contactsystem, as it was necessary to raise large cars within avery limited headroom. However, two of the four trackswere cleared from the overhead obstruction as shown inthe illustrations. The wreck occurred at a sharp bend inthe right-of-way. The messenger cables were detachedfrom the cross catenary suspensions at the insulatorsand the contact wires with their messengers wereallowed to straighten out, thus reducing the tension inthis part of the system and at the same time groupingall four of the contact wires over two of the four resulted in increased working space on one side ofthe right-of-way without appreciably reducing the head-room on the other side. A peculiar freak of this wreck was the fact that t
