We rested comfortably on our sandybeds, and resuming our march before five oclock thismorning, reached a bend in the river four miles dis-tant. As the soldiers had had a tedious march duringthe night, and evinced much fatigue, I concluded toremain here during the clay to give them rest. Our camp was in a very dense thicket of willowsand cotton-woods near the rivers bank, into which wecut our way with axes. Here we had an admirableretreat, whose recesses the rays of the sun could notpenetrate; and we passed the day with some degree ofcomfort.
