Lieutenant Colonel Freeman, , is seen decorating Sergeants Thomas J. Fink and Harry E. Phillips for their bravery. In the face of shell fire, the two sergeants rescued their fellow soldiers who were trapped after a 210mm shell exploded. The photograph was taken on May 17, 1918, in Moymont, France, at Headquarters Company of the 16th Regiment Infantry, 1st Division. The image was received on June 22, 1918, and issued after being censored and released by the Censor on June 28, 1918.
