English painter John Constable (1776-1837) painted The Hay-Wain. This oil on canvas was completed in 1821. Constable's father owned the mill. It shows a haywain crossing a ford near Flatford Mill on the Stour River in Suffolk. A haywain is a horse-drawn cart used for transporting hay, usually at harvest time.
