Flowers inMay : pistillate with nearly orbicular purplescales smaller than the bracts which are obeor-date. serrulate with proiected slender tip. Conesli-4 in. long, oblong-cylindrical, rounded at tipgenerally bearing beads of free pitch with scalesaliout twice as long as the bracts, or rarely withbracts somewhat longer than the scales.^ 1. A.
