Date palms (Phoenix dactylifera) with paper wrapped around the dates to protect the fruit from the rain. These palms are found throughout the Middle-east and northern Africa desert regions. They can grow up to 20 metres tall and bear leaves up to three metres long. Below the leaves are spikes (brown) containing up to 1000 dates. When dried, these dates can be used to make syrups, vinegar and strong liquors. Photographed in California, USA.
