On the evening of March 1 shefell and sprained herself, and during the same night had a 146 MALL. [Vol. XIX. scanty flow. The flow recurred each day, and on the 7th ofMarch she passed the ovum. It was kept in a cool, moistcloth for twenty hours, and when it came into my hands wasat once placed in a large quantity of 60 per cent alcohol. The ovum is very large for its age, having a long diameterof 10 mm. and a short diameter of 7 mm. It is covered withvilli only around its greatest circumference, having two spotswithout villi, as was the case with Reicherts ovum. Thevilli of the chorion are from to mm. long, are branchedand are somewhat fibrous in structure. Upon opening the chorion it was found that the embryonicvesicle is situated just opposite the edge of the zone of Fig. lie.—Section through the umbilical vesicle and its invagination ofspecimen. X 50 times. The three layers correspond with the ecto-derm, mesoderm and entoderm. The invagination marks the cavityof the amnion. About it there is a considerable quantity of magma reticule, which I did not remove, and therefore could not obtain goodcamera drawings. The portion of the chorion to which thevesicle is attached was cut out and stained with alum cochinealand cleared in oil, but even after this treatment it was impos-sible to obtain any clear picture. The specimen was nextimbedded in paraffin and cut into sections 10 microns series proved to be perfect. From the sections a recon-struction was made in wax. The dimensions of the different portions of the vesicle areas follows: No. i.] ORIGIN OF HUMAN MONSTERS. 147 Diameter of stem . mm. Length of st
